Well, another week has gone by, and it's time for another Odds & Ends. I guess let's get right to it:
Box Score:
- Yesterday was our first ever live chat, and it was a good time for all. We didn't have a whole slough of people, but what we didn't have in quantity we had in quality. Associate GM Todd Dennis of the Goldpanners was with us for the whole thing and he answered some questions, shared some stories, and B.S.'ed with us. All around, a good time. For those of you who missed it, we'll definitely be doing it again in the future, and I'd love to see more of you on the chat. I'll also actually announce it in advance, maybe that will help.
- The Peninsula Oilers are accepting applications for their 2010 scholarship. The scholarship is open to high-school seniors at Kenai-area high schools with an interested in baseball and/or other sports. The application form and infosheet are available on their website.
- Two of the Bucs' 2010 catcher recruits had solid days this weekend. On Friday, second-year Buc Coley Crank cranked three homers in three consecutive at-bats and drove in 7 RBI in the Michigan Wolverine's stomping of Jacksonville State. Yesterday, UC Northridge catcher Dominic Piazza had a pair of hits and a pair of RBI's on the nationally-televised Urban Invitational game.
- Looking back at this week's articles on 49th State Hardball: in addition to our chat yesterday, we had a "Where is he now?" for '06 Pilots pitcher Casey Weathers, the revealing of Jason Giambi as our #6 ABL player of all time, and a 2009 recruiting breakdown by state/school.
On Deck:
- The Oilers Gusher is next weekend! Just a reminder for those in the Kenai area, it's on the 27th in the old Carrs. Tickets are $100, and get you dinner, dancing, music, a bar, door prizes, and a chance to see the induction of the first class of the Oilers Hall of Fame. The ticket is good for two people. For more info stop by the Oilers office or call (907) 283-7133.
- On Tuesday, as always, I'll be releasing the next player profile in our countdown of the Top ABL Players of All Time. We're down to #5 this week. Getting into the good stuff now.
- On Thursday we'll be doing a "Where is he now?" on former Bucs pitcher Brett Bordes, who was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2006.
- Sometime this week I'll be typing up a "Familiar Faces" article, which will take a look at some of the returning players from 2009 that have signed on to play in 2010. I'm going to focus this one on the Goldpanners; a little bit down the road I'll do one on the Bucs and then, depending on when/if we get rosters, the other teams as they come along.
Everyone enjoy your Sunday, and have fun going back to work/school/whatever tomorrow!
