2/6/10 Odds & Ends

Well, it's that time again. Another Saturday and another "Odds & Ends". I've gotten a lot of new fans on our Facebook page; in fact, I've gotten a few ABL GM's and probably two dozen players. I'm pretty stoked to get that sort of recognition but with it comes more responsibility. With so many more people reading what I write, including the very people I may be writing about, I feel like I need to hold myself to a higher standard. So the upshot is that I'm inspired to kick it up a notch and make sure to write interesting, accurate articles without fail. Of course sometimes I will make mistakes, hopefully rarely, but I'm counting on you guys to call me out when I'm wrong. The result should be good for you, the reader. Anyhow, down to business:

Box Score:

- Ike Davis (Bucs, 2006) came in at #74 on Top Prospect Alert's top 150 prospects for 2010. We took a look at Ike way back in our ABL in the AFL series, and determined that he had in fact had a pretty freakin' good fall-league season.

- 2010 prospective Panner Austin Wooldridge lit up Texas A&M International for 3 hits and 3 RBI on Tuesday. The UTPB Falcons destroyed the Dustdevils 10-2 to clench their season-opening series by a 2-1 margin, in no small part due to the future Fairbanks backstop's bat.

- While Austin Wooldridge was doing his thing, another 2010 ABL recruit -- Cam Schiller, future Buc -- was almost as good, going 2-4 with 2 RBI against Salt Lake City CC. It was a losing effort for Schiller and his Yavapai Roughriders, but they managed to split the season-opening doubleheader.

- In case you missed it, I posted up a little poll to the right of this text and down a ways. I'm tossing around the idea of starting an "ABL Mailbag" feature on  here; you ask questions, and I answer them. So far it seems that people think such an article would make for good reading but I'm looking for more people who I could count on to get the ball rolling and ask a few good questions for me to answer. So, anyway, go vote in the poll please!

- This week's wrapup: A look at Beau Mills' MLB prospects as he attends Indians' camp this spring, the revealing of Gonzo as the #8 all-time ABLer, and a brief look at the progress of 2007 Fire OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis

On Deck:

- Tomorrow we've got another interview for ya', this time from a veteran of ABL and professional baseball. I caught up with the 2001-2002 Goldpanners pitcher Zak Basch to get his perspective on life & baseball.

- We're up to #7 on our All-Time Top 20 ABL Players countdown. This one is sure to rub some people the wrong way, so I give you permission in advance to flame the hell out of me in the comments section on Tuesday.

- Thursday we'll have another preview of a probable 2010 Goldpanner, Tony Ciagrani, a southpaw pitcher out of Rice University

That's it! Have a good weekend, and don't forget to check out the great articles I've got coming your way this week.
