Trio of ABL Pitchers throw mid-week gems

If you take a peek at College Baseball Splits' D1 daily recap for yesterday (Feb. 24th) you might see some familiar names. A few ABL-connected pitchers put up top performances on Wednesday:

Louisiana State's Chris Matulis (Bucs, 2009) led the way, picking up the win on five innings of shutout ball against McNeese State. The sophomore southpaw sat down five on strikes, walked none, and surrendered four hits on the day. Matulis was drafted in the 47th round of the 2008 draft as a high school prospect by the Tampa Bay organization. Pitching in relief for the Bucs in 2009 he had 33 strikeouts in as many innings.

Goldpanners Recruit and Rice Freshman J.T. Chargois had a solid appearance in relief for the Owls on Wednesday. Throwing an estimated twenty-four pitches over two innings against Lamar, he also held the opposition scoreless and notched a pair of strikeouts himself. Chargois is a two-way player capable of manning the middle infield. He has yet to log a game-time at-bat but will definitely be worked into the lineup at some point. In the meantime, if he can continue to put up appearances like the one this week, he should be an anchor in Rice's bullpen.

All-ABL Pitcher Ryan Millard (Fire, 2009) had a similar performance for Dallas Baptist. Going two innings in relief, Millard (once again) held the opposition scoreless, keeping the always-potent Texas lineup from picking up a single base hit. Millard was the ace of the AIA rotation in 2009, racking up a team-leading 52.1 IP and going a perfect 4-0 with a 2.75 ERA.

As always, we will continue to track the performance of our Alaska League alumni and recruits wherever they may be. Thanks again to College Baseball Splits for the great info, and as always, to AnchorageBucs.com for the photo.
