What's another way to say "ridiculously awesome?" Zak Edgington. There is no better way to describe his performance on Thursday when the Goldpanners recruit took the hill for Santa Barbara City College against Ventura. Edgington threw a nine-inning complete game, allowed two runs and...are you sitting down?...struck out 21 batters. TWENTY-ONE STRIKEOUTS. It's only possible to strike out 27 batters in a nine-inning game, and the dude struck out 21. Aside from the catcher, the rest of the team practically had the day off on defense. He also did not surrender a walk until the 9th inning. Edgington has 97 strikeouts on 75.2 IP this season. Seriously.
I hate to force the rest of these guys to try and follow an act like that, but here goes...
Keeping the streak alive:
OF Jesse Sikorski (Panners) remained hot for Johns Hopkins this week and has extended his hitting streak to 15 games. The biggest day came last Tuesday when he banged out a Grand Salami against Montclair State. It was his only hit of the day, but Sikorski sacrificed in another run for a total of 5 RBI's over the course of the game before earning the rest of the night off and being sat for a pinch hitter. Thanks in part to Sikorski's consistency, Johns Hopkins has finished their conference schedule a perfect 18-0 and is now 34-3 overall on the year.
Northern Colorado Goldpanners recruit Jarrod Berggren shone this week as well. The Berg went 10-for-20 at the plate over the span in question, including a three-for-four day in the opening matchup of Sunday's doubleheader. Berggren hasn't had a hitless game since March 23rd. By my count, his hitting streak is up to 21 games now.
It's kind of a dubious honor to perpetuate this streak, but (in)complete games are kind of becoming a theme around here. Panners recruit Thomas Hoenshell was the latest to go the distance only to watch a teammate finish up the extra frames. On Thursday, Hoenshell took the mound for Cypress College against Santa Ana and went nine solid innings. He surrendered a pair of runs on 7 hits, striking out 9 and not walking a single man. Chargers closer Garrett Travis came in to wrap up the last three innings, but couldn't get the job done.
Bouncing back:
Another Bucs recruit, Bret Atwood, looks like he will finish the season strong. If you remember a few weeks back, Atwood had put together a pretty decent hitting streak through mid-season and had multi-hit games for most of that stretch. It seems like once he broke the streak his bat cooled down for a while, but this past week he's put together a couple multi-hit games to prove that his stellar first half wasn't just a fluke. This Friday and Saturday combined, he went 5-for-9. Not too shabby. Hopefully he can sustain that kind of momentum into the Alaska League season.
The rest of the best:
A potential future Glacier Pilot went the distance and DID pick up the complete-game win this week. Joe Sawicki of Northern Colorado closed out nine whole frames, allowing 2 runs -- only one earned -- to cross the plate on four hits. The performance took him 119 pitches and improved his record to 5-2 on the year. He also posted his career-longest outing at 9 innings, topping the record he set last week at 8 innings.
Trey Wimmer and Michael Robertson -- both Fire recruits out of Liberty -- combined for a 5-for-10 day on Sunday. Wimmer was 2-for-4 with a run and 3 RBI; Robertson was 3-for-6 with one run and one RBI. Wimmer's last hit was timely, as he managed to push the go-ahead run across and the Flames put Presbyterian down for good, sweeping the series.
Michigan C/DH Coley Crank (Bucs) is back at it, posting three consecutive multi-hit games this week, going 7-for-10 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. The crowning game of this mini-streak was on the 23rd, during the first game of a doubleheader, in which he went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, and cranked his team-leading seventh homer. He went hitless in the nightcap of that twin billing, but came back with a 2-for-4 appearance the next day. Crank is really putting together an impressive season. In addition to HR, he leads Michigan in RBI (44) and total bases (90), and he's putting up an OPS of 1.017.
