2010 Draft Eligibles: Peninsula Oilers

Shayne Willson could be the first Oiler

The MLB rule-four draft is looming large, coming up in just a couple weeks. We've already had a peek at who's up for grabs from the Bucs and the Miners, and now we're headed southward down to Kenai for a look at the Peninsula Oilers. The Oilers have a bunch of draft-eligible guys this year, due in no small part to the fact that their 2008 squad was composed almost entirely of sophomores and freshmen. Those guys are all now draft eligible (minus a few who have been drafted as juniors, or hung up the spikes).

Who are some interesting players from a draft perspective? I don't see any top-100 types on this list, but beyond that there are actually quite a few very solid picks that will likely go later on the first day and early on the second.

I'm predicting that the first Oiler to go this year will be Shayne Willson. Willson was drafted straight out of high school by the Minnesota Twins during the 16th round. He opted to play junior college ball, put up some great numbers, and made two NJCAA World Series appearances. Since being recruited by Canisius, he's continued to hit the cover off the ball. His one black mark stat-wise was last year with the Oilers, but outside of a couple of guys, everyone on that team struggled at the plate. Other than that he's been drafted relatively high already, he's proven himself at the collegiate level, and he's a senior this year so there shouldn't be any signability issues. I don't see any reason why he shouldn't go on the first day.

One guy I really like is P.J. Sequeira. After his ABL stint, he went on to play in the Northwoods League where he was selected as an All-Star and also helped the Rochester Honkers nail down the league championship. He's got some real power potential and he's started to break out as an upperclassman. Last year he was chosen all-conference.

Seth Harvey could be a decent prospect. He was ranked the #9 prospect in the ABL back in 2008, and he went on to play in the WCL last summer when he led that league in Saves (11). He really came on strong as a junior with Washington State; this year he's getting roughed up a little bit but he's put up a K/BB ratio of 22/10 in 23.1 IP. He's a big strong kid and I think someone will pick him up as a middle-round pick.

Jeremy Gould could be a significant pick; he had a great year for the Oilers in '08, just missing .300 and leading the team in RBI. He went on to a kinda blah season in the Cape, though. And at this level stats are only part of the picture. He'll get drafted, but your guess as to when is as good or better than mine.

The hometown faithful will be waiting to see what happens with Steve Mabeus, out of Lewis & Clark State, who is a Soldotna, AK native. His big brother Chris was drafted in 2001 by Oakland and logged some MLB innings with the Brewers before retiring.

Anyway, here's the big list of Oilers available to be drafted. As was the case with the previous lists, I've made every effort to ensure that this list is complete and accurate, but if anyone notices any errors or omissions, be sure to let me know!

  1. P.J is a great kid. I interviewed him for my blog a while ago.
