Straight outta that other state that is supposed to be big comes a new Glacier Pilots recruit for 2010: 3B/OF Kevin Lusson. He's in the midst of his sophomore season with the D1 Texas Longhorns who, in case you haven't heard, are kind of a big deal in college baseball.
Lusson has come on strong as of late, but his stats have been hampered by a slow start and, according to College Splits, a tough schedule and a pitcher-friendly park. At time of writing, Lusson's line reads .260 29RBI 8HR and an OPS of .884, but adjusted for park & schedule it's more like .298/33/9/.987.Those are the kind of numbers that the Pilots are hoping he puts up for them this year in Anchorage.
Kevin isn't the first Lusson to play in the Alaska League, not even in this decade. Fans of the Bucs might remember his big brother and Longhorns teammate Kyle, who hit .290 for the black & gold in 2008. I guess it must be true what they say about blood being thicker than water. Imagine what Mom & Dad Lusson are going to have to deal with at the Thanksgiving table this fall, bring a Buc & Pilot to dinner together under one roof. But seriously, I imagine Kyle's experience in Alaska may have had something to do with Kevin's desire to come and see how the game is played in the great white north. I think one of the biggest recruiting tools this league has is its former players.
Lusson's strength is his versatility. Switch-hitting is obviously a plus, but he can play almost anywhere. He's got a good strong fielder's arm, so the Longhorns have been using him at 3B & OF, but in high school he played all over the infield. He's known to make the big play but it's also worth noting that he's currently leading Texas in errors by a comfortable margin with 11. From the scouting videos I've seen, it looks like he's got a good fundamental swing and a lot of patience at the plate. But don't take my word for it; PnRScouting.com has scouting videos on his defense and at the plate.
That's my take on Lusson. In about a month we'll be seeing the real deal and with it will be sure to come more photos and hopefully a more detailed scouting report. Until then, keep your eyes open for more Player Profiles for the Pilots and all the other teams of the Alaska Baseball League.
He had a slow start batting average wise, but his OPS has been pretty good all year thanks to his awesome walk rate. At one point during the year he had more walks than strikeouts. Combining that with the decent power he's shown make's him one to watch for.
ReplyDeleteGood catch, dude. Like I said, tremendous patience at the plate. My question is whether or not he's too patient, because you want a guy to be aggressive on a good pitch. But it's the questions that make a player fun to watch. Can't wait to see Lusson at Mulcahy.
