O'Koyea Dickson, the big, strong California masher out of the Bay Area, joined the Glacier Pilots half way through their 2010 campaign after a very successful year with the College of San Mateo. CSM has a reputable young community college baseball program which is quite adept at developing players for university and professional baseball, and I have no doubt that Dickson will soon join those ranks.  On the college season this past year, Dickson posted a -- no typo -- 1.155 (.455 + .700) OPS, .369 batting average, belted ten homers and drove in drove in 42 RBI's in 34 games (33 starts).

As a juco sophomore, Dickson has flown under the radar a little bit the last couple years as far as national media attention goes, but he should have no trouble transferring to a four-year school. He was also one of the most prolific players in the state in high school, leading California in a plethora of statistical categories, even cumulative ones, despite missing time for injury.

As a late arrival, I've only seen a limited amount of Dickson's time on the field, but that has been plenty to get me excited about him. At 5'10" he's tied with Ernesto Ortiz as the shortest Glacier Pilot. But at 220 he's also listed as the heaviest. And let me tell you, he's got a lot of brawn to throw at that ball and he can just punish it with the bat. He looks like a big, stout slugger and he can pulverize it. He's already hit a couple out of the park (and remember, he's only been up for 16 games as I'm writing) and one of those I saw where he just whipped the heck out of it right over the left-field fence. No question at all, it was gone. He's committed a lot of errors so far but according to my admittedly limited experience seeing Dickson, I thought his footwork and hustle looked pretty good. Reading Perfect Game's high school scouting on him, they seem to agree on the feet, as well as the fact that he just looks "hitterish" (in their words). One look at him and you see a slugger.

Unfortunately for Dickson and the Pilots, they've been mathematically eliminated from contention for the ABL crown. But depending on who goes to Wichita, which players they lose at the end of the regular season, and what Dickson's plans for the fall are, I'd love to see him make the trip. It would be good exposure for someone I'm sure will go on to big-school ball and very, very likely be drafted into the professional ranks.
