Fans at Coral Seymour Park last night witnessed an unforgettable event: Eddie Orozco threw a complete game no-hitter against the Mat-Su Miners in front of the Oilers' home crowd.
To be fair, he "cheated" a little bit. This complete game was the nightcap of a doubleheader, and as such, he only had to go seven innings. But still: seven hitless innings. Five strikeouts. Two walks. One man making the Mat-Su Miners batters look silly. It doesn't get much better than that, folks.
This dramatic outing couldn't have come at a better time for the Oilers. Cruising in first place all season long, the Oilers came up against a streaking Miners club who had clawed their way up the standings and were nipping at the Oilers' heels. The Peninsula team then dropped the first two games of the six-game home and away series and saw their lead slip away as the Miners jumped out to a two-game lead in the ABL standings. Orozco's gem -- fresh on the heels of the opening-game clobbering of the Miners, led by Jeff Popick who hit a grand salami in the early match -- propelled the Oilers back into a tie for first place.
Sole ownership of first place in the Alaska League will be on the line in tomorrow night's doubleheader finale for the Oilers and Miners at Coral Seymour in Kenai. Fans down on the peninsula should bring a friend -- it's two-for-one Tesoro night. And, as tonight's game shows, you never know when history will be in the making. Congrats to Eddie on the great performance!
