The rankings this week look pretty close to the official league standings, so I've decided to include the calculated "power points" in the table to illustrate that while the standings at the top of the league might be close, one team is running away with the power rankings for the past week.
Moving Up:
The Goldpanners are the big story here. They're sitting atop the league standings right now; officially they're only one game up on the Miners and Oilers. But in my calculated power rankings, they are way out in front this week. The ranking formula takes into account both streak and the team's last ten wins and losses. The Goldpanners are riding an eight-game winning streak and have gone 9-1 in their last ten league games. After a mediocre start to the year, the Panners are charging full steam ahead and aren't looking back, which makes them the #1 ranked team this week.
The Bucs and the Fire are both moving up this week compared to last; not only have they improved in the standings but it is a genuine improvement in performance as well. The Bucs have put up a respectable 5-5 showing, including wins in their last two games, which is pretty decent the way their season began. They have plenty of season left to get into the middle of the pileup at the top of the standings. The Fire are right behind them; they've lost their last few match-ups but managed to halt their previous losing streak with some wins here and there and they look like they could be coming around. They'll have to kick it up a notch to make a run for the title but it's not out of the question.
Of course the Oilers have moved up to second place, but they just barely eeked it out by one point over the Miners. They're still in the thick of that three-way race for first so there's really nothing new here.
Falling Down:
The Miners have slipped down a spot to third place this week, but they just missed second by the skin of their teeth. Along with the nearly-identical Oilers and the power ranking leaders the Goldpanners, they're fighting tooth and nail for that top dog spot, and those three teams have been beating the tar out of each other lately.
The big story in this category is the Glacier Pilots, who have fallen all the way to last place in both the power rankings and the real league standings. These guys just can't seem to put it all together this year. On the back of a seven-game losing streak, right as the previously-last Fire have shown signs of life, the Pilots have fallen all the way to the bottom of the standings. Can they make a season of it and fight their way back toward the top of the standings? It's not out of the question. They're nine games back with a lot of baseball to play. But they'll have to make a complete turn-around to do it.
